Cravar Rana: Waxed Twill vs Leather
Same bag, same layout, two very different materials. Here's what the extra money for leather actually buys.

Price difference
| Model | Leather | Waxed twill | You save |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rana 10 | $325 | $180 | $145 |
| Rana 11 | $380 | $265 | $115 |
| Rana 13 | $400 | $280 | $120 |
| Rana 15 | $440 | $300 | $140 |
Leather: why pay more
- Full grain, vegetable-tanned hide that softens, darkens and develops a patina
- Five colors: Black, Espresso, Fox, Terra and (for 13/15) Vintage Brown
- The more structured, "heirloom" look most people associate with Cravar
Waxed twill: why it might be smarter
- $120–145 cheaper depending on size
- Lighter — on the Rana 15, 1.4 kg vs 1.6 kg empty
- Less fuss in rain; the wax repels water and can be refreshed
- Four colors: Black, Mocca, Olive and Navy, still with leather straps and trim
Know before you buy: new waxed twill shows creases and lighter spots as the wax moves around. Cravar says this is normal and evens out with use or a little heat from a hair dryer; plan on re-waxing roughly every couple of years.
Our take
If the bag is a daily workhorse and weight matters, buy waxed twill and spend the savings on a lens. If you want the bag to be part of the appeal — something that looks better in five years — leather is worth it.
