Pros and cons
What we like
- Compact, truly all-day size for mirrorless and rangefinder kits
- Silent stud closure — no Velcro rip in quiet places
- Waxed twill version is excellent value at $180
- Same lifetime warranty as the big models
Watch out for
- No laptop slot — tablet only
- Tight for a DSLR with a large zoom attached
- Leather version is heavy for its size (1.3 kg loaded with dividers)
Build and materials
Every Rana shares the same construction, and it's the main reason to choose Cravar over a nylon bag:
- Full grain, vegetable-tanned leather from a tannery partner in Yogyakarta, Indonesia (pit-tanned over about two months)
- Solid brass hardware, handmade by a family business
- Marine-grade acrylic fabric lining with good water repellency
- Closed-cell foam padding, with side flaps for weather protection
- Silent stud closure — fast to open, no Velcro noise
- Removable, adjustable shoulder strap with an oversized pad, plus a luggage-handle slot
- Made in-house at Cravar's own workshop in Jakarta
- Free tracked DHL shipping worldwide (usually 5–10 days) and a lifetime warranty
Cravar also uses as few leather panels as possible and covers internal rivets so they don't scratch gear — small details, but the kind you notice after a year of use. Expect natural marks and tonal variation; that's normal for veg-tanned full grain leather, and it darkens into a patina with use.
What it's like to carry
All Rana bags are 13 cm (5.1 in) deep, which keeps them close to the body. The studs open quickly and silently, so you can get to the camera without the Velcro rip that gives away many camera bags. The side flaps tuck over the top corners of the main compartment for light rain; independent reviewers who tested earlier Rana bags reported they held up well in wet weather, but no leather bag is a substitute for a rain cover in a downpour.
Leather or waxed twill?
The waxed twill Rana 10 costs $180 versus $325 in leather. You keep the same layout, leather straps and trim, and lose some weight. Leather wins on looks over time. More in our twill vs leather guide.
